The subtitle of “The State of the Nation’s Ecosystems” is “Measuring the Lands, Waters and Living Resources of the United States”. The report was prepared by the H. John Heinz III Center for Science, Economics and the Environment, "a nonprofit institution dedicated to improving the scientific and economic foundation for environmental policy".

Another Heinz Center report, this one focuses on the nation’s small dams. It outlines the current state of research on and experience with dam removal including lessons learned from previous dam removals. The report is meant for decision makers, and gives step-by-step guidance for informed and responsible decision making.

The National Academies Press "publishes over 200 books a year on a wide range of topics in science, engineering, and health”. The books are for sale in hard copy but more than 2500 are also available to read free online. You can search titles or text by keywords, browse by category or just take a look at the publications of the Water Science and Technology Board. Two of the latest offerings available online are “Riparian Areas: Functions and Strategies for Management” and “Florida Bay Research Programs and Their Relation to the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan”.

Topic in Depth: The Color of Water

Visit eight Web sites covering everything from why water is blue to possible causes of bright green or orange water. Great Lakes Maritime History Project

The story of shipping on the Great Lakes is one of the more colorful and intriguing eras in Wisconsin’s history. A consortium of libraries and universities put together this online sampling of photographs and descriptions of vessels dating back to the mid-1800s to serve as an introduction to their maritime history collections. The site can be searched by broad subject heading or keyword but also has an advanced search capability.
